The security field has undergone major changes in recent times and has enjoyed a 50% compound growth rate over the last three years. The current trend in terms of European security policy points to a Community-wide policy and strategy in which critical investments are to be made in applications which are exclusively civil, and associated support for these applications, not only in relation to the execution of Community policies and initiatives on Security, but also in relation to freedom, security and justice, as well as transportation, health, (the enhancement of levels of preparedness in response to the intentional release of biological or chemical agents), civil protection (both natural and industrial), energy, the environment, and foreign policies.
